What's the difference between STEM and AP?
The difference between STEM and the traditional AP coursework is the source of the curriculum. The Northgate STEM coursework is developed in partnership with local STEM partners like Yamaha, Georgia Power, Coweta Water Authority, Newnan Utilities, Grenzebach, and many more. The AP curricula are provided by the College Board and are part of an internationally recognized series of courses. For more information, see the College Board website: College Board AP Central. Both curricula are rigorous and designed to provide students with a challenging course of study.
Do I have to take all of the STEM courses?
No. Northgate recognizes that all students do not have the same interests in STEM. We encourage students to choose challenging electives that have applications in STEM (ex: Fine Arts, World Languages, etc.) In order to graduate as a Northgate STEM Scholar, you must take roughly 60% of the STEM coursework in the STEM Academy Pacing Guide.
Why should I take STEM courses?
STEM courses provide rigorous, hands-on work that is unique to Northgate. If you are interested in a STEM career, participating in the STEM Academy will help you better understand what it takes to prepare for your career. Further, you could get the chance to try out your chosen career during an internship. Participating in the STEM Academy will also help to set you apart from the typical college applicant.
How do I get in to the STEM Academy?
Selection for the STEM Academy begins in 8th grade with teacher recommendation. Also, student performance on the CRCT/Georgia Milestones Tests are also considered.
